I’m surrounded by sick people!! Everywhere I go someone has a version of the cold or flu and yet I continue to wake up everyday feeling great, what’s my secret?? In this post I want to share with you my all time favourite plants that I resort to whenever I start to get those icky feelings: Garlic and Oregano!!
In my last post I discussed the phenomenal ability plants have in healing our bodies and with the same mechanisms as pharmaceuticals. After all healing with plants is as old as mankind itself: ancient civilizations would resort to nature in order to combat human illnesses. Contemporary science has taken a spin-off of what the ancients discovered so long ago. Using the healing power of nature and recreating it synthetically: in a yummy chemical stew that is conveniently packaged and available at every corner pharmacy. Where am I going with all this? As we have all become too quick to resort to the shelves of our nearest drug store when ever we feel unwell, I wanted to take you back to the ancient healing world and compare some of the medicinal uses of Garlic V.S. Oregano.
Garlic is probably one of the most versatile of the plant world in its properties. With anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antioxidant and circulatory benefits, how can we not indulge in such a delicious bulb!!?? Some studies have directly compared garlic up against a couple of the most popular antibiotics, such as penicillin and streptomycin showing to be just as effective. Used for therapeutic supplementation, you can find garlic oil in capsule form on the shelves of your local health food store but whole garlic cloves share the same perks and are a wonderful addition to any meal.
Oregano also known to have antioxidant properties, act as a wonderful immune booster and is one of a couple properties it shares with garlic. In addition to helping strengthening immunity against nasty viruses, on its own oregano has antimicrobial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties that are successful at fighting off ailments such as: intestinal parasites and gastrointestinal bugs. If your feeling stuffed up or congested, when used with a vaporizer or diffuser, this herb has amazing anti-histamine abilities. You can find oregano oil on almost any shelf these days and is a wonderful addition to your medicine cabinet.
With plants like oregano and garlic so readily available to us, not only are they effective in their healing abilities but they also come without an extensive list of negative side effects that are often associated with the pharmaceutical world. One plant can do the same job as multiple drugs, making them more cost-effective and better for you in the long run…no harm in trying!!
