CBD Oil; Modern day Cancer phenomenon.

Hello 2019!! Thank you to all of you who follow me and have yet to see a blog post for months. I appreciate you and am just concluding the end of one of the most challenging years yet of my life, so thank you for baring with me. The most recent event of 2018, was the acute and rapid decline of my Moosonee dog rescue, Niska. It was just 10 years ago that he was just a stray on the streets of Moose Factory; scrounging for scrapes at the gas station. I remember the day we met, like it was yesterday. I walked out of the hospital to see him standing there, all 13 lbs of him. I bent down to greet him and he came right up to me and put his head on my lap, marking the beginning of a inseparable relationship.

Niska 2018

Fast forward to Dec 18, 2018 and I am standing in the office of veterinarian clinic, getting the news that my dog might not even make it to Christmas day. Just 3 weeks prior he was like a puppy, frolicking in the snow… how quickly these things happen. With a diagnosis of end stage Lymphoma (Cancer of the lymphatic system), I have been determined to do what ever it takes to make his life as long and as quality as possible. That is where I learned more about CBD oil.

CBD stands for cannabidiol. This is an active compound found in cannabis plants; 1 of 113 active compounds. Used for thousands of years and one of the very first plants to ever be cultivated; cannabis was used to to treat anxiety, digestive issues, tapeworm, gout, rheumatism, malaria, poor memory and so many other ailments. Today, cutting edge research pegs the compounds found in the plant to be an effective therapeutic treatment in PTSD, sleep disorders, epilepsy and all forms of Cancer.

In the treatment of Cancer, CBDs work off of the endocannabinoid system (ECS), found through out the mammalian central and peripheral nervous system. CBD “regulates key cell signalling pathways that are involved in cell survival, invasion, angiogenesis, metastasis, etc.” (1)

What this means is that CBD, inhibits the growth of Cancer cells and helps to destroy and stops cell replication. What a phenomenal discovery and an exciting option for those faced with a Cancer diagnosis. In addition to prevention and destruction of Cancer cells, it is a great therapy for pain management and increasing appetite in Cancer patients.

In dogs, the endocannabinoid system is similar to humans. Which means that the same receptors are activated when CBD is orally taken. I have been trialling it on my dog Niska and the improvement is profound as far as improved energy, increased appetite and less anxiety. As far as the lymphoma is concerned, he may be to far advanced to change the inevitable outcome of his diagnosis. All I can hope for is an improvement in his quality of life and to get as many, days, months or years as possible with him.
